Recently, India has proposed measures in protest of the European Union’s plan to impose carbon taxes on all flights touching EU airspace. ALPA has also strongly opposed this tax, and believes a reduction in aviation emissions must be undertaken through ICAO, not unilateral taxing schemes that violate U.S. sovereignty.
EU’s airline emission tax is best opposed at the multilateral level
The government is reportedly toying with the idea of imposing retaliatory measures against the European Union (EU) over its unilateral decision to impose a carbon tax on Indian airlines flying over Europe .
The measures contemplated include reviewing or abrogating bilateral service and open skies agreements, besides imposing countervailing duties and cess on European airlines.
