What do jet engines, computers and GPS have in common?  All of these commonly used technologies were commercialized through investments by the Department of Defense (DOD).  The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation released an excellent report regarding DOD investments in clean energy technologies.  DOD has determined that reliance on fossil fuels by DOD poses a national security threat (pgs. 84-88).  DOD has urged Congress to allow them to enter into longer term contracts to procure advanced biofuels to be utilized as 50-50 drop in fuels.  ALPA and the airline industry have supported DOD efforts in this area.  However, we face very well-funded opposition from the oil industry and their supporters on Capitol Hill who continue to insist that we remain beholden to oil even if it decreases our national security.  We expect this issue to heat up in November after the elections and Congress returns to Washington to tie up loose ends like the National Defense Authorization Act.
